Can I / Can’t I? 🎄

When your pregnancy falls right during the holiday season, a lot of questions pop up under the Christmas tree. Can you eat a little cheese? Have a sip of champagne? Dance all night long? Between family traditions, the desire to celebrate, and medical recommendations, it’s not always easy to know where to draw the line.

No need to stress: the Tajinebanane team has prepared a summary of the main “can I / can’t I” points so you can enjoy the holiday season with peace of mind – combining fun and caution, all without guilt. ⭐

Can I eat foie gras and meat? 🦆

Yes… but only well cooked. Raw or partially cooked foie gras is not recommended during pregnancy due to the risk of listeriosis. It also contains a high amount of vitamin A, which can be harmful to the healthy development of your baby.

In contrast, canned or well-cooked foie gras (cooked above 100°C, pasteurized, or sterilized) is considered safe.

For meat, there’s nothing stopping you from enjoying it! However, proper cooking is important: steaks should not be rare or undercooked – always choose well-cooked options.

To avoid: Fresh, partially cooked or homemade foie gras and undercooked meat – don’t take any risks.

Can I eat cheese and eggs? 🧀

Yes, but not all kinds. Good news: You don’t have to give up the cheese platter! Hard cheeses (like Comté, Emmental, or Parmesan) and pasteurized cheeses are allowed.

Raw milk cheeses and soft or mold-ripened cheeses (like Brie, Camembert, or Roquefort) should be avoided.

Tip: Cheese is safe to eat if it’s well-cooked, for example in a gratin.

For eggs: avoid desserts made with raw eggs. The same applies to mayonnaise – homemade mayonnaise is not recommended; opt for commercially prepared mayonnaise with pasteurized eggs.

Can I have a glass of champagne or wine? 🍷

No. Even during the holidays, alcohol is prohibited throughout pregnancy.

Don’t worry: this doesn’t mean you can’t toast! There are plenty of great non-alcoholic alternatives: mocktails, 0% sparkling wine, festive juices… so you can safely raise your glass.

And remember: the enjoyment comes mostly from the moment shared, not the drink itself.

Can I eat smoked salmon and seafood? 🦑

Rather no, unless it’s well cooked.

Smoked salmon, oysters, tarama, caviar, and all raw seafood carry a risk of listeriosis or toxoplasmosis. However, well-cooked salmon, hot shrimp, or seared scallops are completely safe.

Our tip: If it’s raw → no. If it’s well cooked → yes.

Can I stay up late and party? 🎶

Yes, as long as you listen to your body.

There’s nothing wrong with staying up a little later than usual and enjoying the festive Christmas or New Year atmosphere. The key is to pay attention to your energy, take breaks, sit down when needed, and don’t hesitate to go to bed earlier than others if necessary.

Remember: you don’t have to be the last one awake, but you’re free to enjoy yourself more than usual.

Can I dance and move around? 💃

Yes, but gently.

Of course, you don’t need to spend your Christmas Eve or New Year’s sitting all the time (unless that feels best for you). Dance, walk, and move however you like, as long as it’s comfortable and without sudden movements. Some gentle movement is actually good for your body. Just avoid jumps, very intense movements, or crowded dance floors where you might get an accidental hit to your belly.

Trust yourself: your body will tell you when it’s time to rest.

How should you dress while pregnant during the holidays? 👗

Beautiful outfits and comfort are not incompatible, even during pregnancy (or after). Ideal for the holiday season: clothes that don’t squeeze your belly, made of soft materials, and cuts that flatter your body.
