EXTRAORDINARY BREASTFEEDING STORIES
MARINE'S BREASTFEEDING JOURNEY
For World Breastfeeding Week, we continue to give a voice to moms whose breastfeeding stories always touch us deeply. Today, we meet Marine, the mother of three-year-old Olive. She shares her journey, where patience, research, and love were the keys to success, especially when each challenge opened the door to new possibilities. 🤱
A SMOOTH START TO BREASTFEEDING… OR ALMOST.
Marine’s breastfeeding story began in the summer of 2022. Feeding started smoothly, Olive was a “hungry baby,” always latched onto her mom. Very quickly, however, Marine noticed that something wasn’t quite right, particularly with the frequent regurgitations. After consulting a healthcare professional, the verdict was clear: Olive’s tongue and lip frenulum were too short. A frenectomy was recommended, and Marine and her partner agreed.
Yet, the procedure didn’t solve the problem. As Marine puts it, “the geysers continued,” but giving up was out of the question. She then consulted a lactation consultant, tried eliminating lactose, and experimented with different breastfeeding positions. Eventually, it was an unexpected accessory that saved the day: the baby carrier—and especially the upright breastfeeding position—which finally soothed Olive.
AFTER RETURNING TO WORK, A NEW BALANCE TO FIND…
When Marine returned to work after a few months, a whole new chapter began! She started pumping her milk between trips: “I went from site to site with my freezer bag under my arm,” she recalls.
Even the little ones noticed this detail: “The kids at school often asked me what I was putting in the fridge, they loved it when I told them it was milk for Olive.”
Despite her busy days, Marine kept up the famous morning and evening feeds, a ritual she continued to share with her daughter. After 7 or 8 months, Olive even said her first word: “Titi.”
It all seemed so natural. Nearly two years of breastfeeding adventure passed for Marine and Olive. When Marine began feeling the fatigue of nursing, she was patient—she wanted weaning to come from Olive, not from herself.
One evening, Marine read the book Les Baleines Allaitent Aussi by Alison, and that’s when the magic happened: Olive whispered, “Mom, I’m big now, it’s finished, Titi.” At that moment, Marine felt ready too.
“If I had to do it all over again, I’d do everything the same way,” Marine concludes proudly.
