EXTRAORDINARY BREASTFEEDING STORIES
MARIE OPENS UP
On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week (in France), we set out to give a voice to mothers with fascinating breastfeeding stories. For this first story, we had the chance to speak with Marie, whose journey beautifully illustrates the patience and perseverance it sometimes takes to nourish your little ones, especially when the circumstances are as demanding as they are unexpected!
A BREASTFEEDING JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER
Marie shared that her son was only two years old when she found out she was pregnant - with triplets! Since she had already breastfed her eldest, it felt natural to want to continue this beautiful journey with her daughters as well. Before giving birth, she scheduled an appointment with a lactation consultant to learn about her options and get proper guidance.
When she arrived at the maternity ward, Marie came prepared, with all her equipment, including her breast pump. But when her three girls were born at seven and a half months, only one of them was able to latch right away.
“I had to breastfeed her, then weigh her to make sure she was gaining enough since she was premature, and after that, I had to pump milk for the other two,” she explains.
For her other two daughters, a rather uncommon method was used: a small tube attached to Marie’s finger, connected to her expressed milk, allowing them to feed while avoiding any nipple confusion.
BACK HOME: BREASTFEEDING STILL GOING STRONG
During her stay at the hospital, the pace was intense, with Marie’s partner staying home to take care of their eldest.
“I had to call the nurses for every feeding… in the middle of the night, it was just great,” she says with a hint of irony.
While coming home brought a bit more comfort and flexibility, the schedule remained “extremely demanding” for Marie.
“By the time I finished one feeding, pumped the milk, and distributed it to the babies, it was almost time to start all over again,” she recalls.
Despite the exhaustion, Marie managed to maintain this exclusive breastfeeding routine for four months, alternating between nursing her youngest directly, co-feeding her eldest, and pumping milk for her two daughters.
“I finally stopped after seven months when I went back to work,” she concludes.
